BEMIDJI, Minn. — Coaches are never satisfied.
And it was clear early in what became a 4-1 UMD win Friday night that the Bulldog coaches were not going to be close to satisfied.
UMD’s puck management was not great. Bemidji State likes to apply pressure, and the Beavers were doing a great job of forcing mistakes because of that pressure. Simply put, UMD did not handle it well. Fittingly, it was a bad pinch at Bemidji’s blue line in the final minute that led to the three-on-one that the Beavers converted on to spoil Carl Axelsson’s shutout.
Even though UMD won the game, it will need to show a response in the road rematch here. This is the final non-conference test before the Bulldogs start playing for points, and win or lose it has to be a better performance.
Defenseman Grayden Siepmann and forward Barrett Hall picked up injuries on Friday. The defensive pairs are jumbled, and Kade Kohanski returns from a four-game absence to take Hall’s place on the Plante line.
Mostly different lines but mostly the same personnel for Bemidji State.
