SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) – Mayor Jim Paine said the state of Superior is “strong and the future is bright” in his annual State of the City address on Tuesday.
The mayor celebrated how much they have accomplished in the past year and set some big goals for the years to come.
He says the completion of Hammond and Tower Avenue redesigns have made neighborhoods nicer and safer. Paine says it is now easier to get around, even without a vehicle, as DTA service has expanded in the Billings Park and South Superior areas.
The City has also addressed the housing crisis with investments in the new Harbor House to shelter families facing homelessness and the Lake Superior Apartments, the first market rate apartment building with rent controlled units. Paine says he will propose two new investments in affordable housing in the coming weeks.
When the Blatnik Bridge closes next year for replacement, planning is nearly complete but it will “create a historic disruption to the community”. A fund has been set aside in the 2027 budget to allow for quickly adapting to problems facing commuters and businesses.
Superior is wrapping up its first full season of lead line replacements with no cost to homeowners and hopes to complete that work as quickly as possible.
With increased funding, the City continues to open new parks and rebuild current parks and playgrounds and will expand access to the waterfront at Allouez Bay.
Mayor Paine wrapped up his speech by naming Callie Grones as Citizen of the Year.
