I’m not the most avid hiker, nor am I an offroad biker or rock climber, but over the last few years I have developed a love for simply being outdoors experiencing whatever the wind blows my way. This last weekend, I took advantage of the cooler temperatures and spent some time with my partner wandering Duluth’s public parkland.
The beach along Park Point was full of shorebirds on Saturday (though I’m not sureĀ what those birds were — maybe some species of Sandpiper?), and even more our our avian neighbors soared and perched along & through the trees and dunes as I sat in the sand. There is something to be said about the relaxing power of waves colliding with the shore; how loud and awesome it is to watch Lake Superior throw itself on the sand.
Sunday afternoon was spent on the Superior Hiking Trail up from the Lake Superior Zoo, where the low water in Keene Creek has introduced new places to sit and admire the splendor of ancient stone looming over a trickling stream. I certainly would never suggest consumption of the Devil’s Lettuce in a public place, but if you find yourself under a green haze with a bag of sour gummy worms… well, this certainly is one of the best places to enjoy the vestiges of Summer and watch the birch trees change color.
