Aug 29 (Field Level Media) – Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson is set to undergo left shoulder surgery, MLB.com reported Saturday, with a timetable for a return not yet established.
Wilson, 24, last played in a game on Aug. 16 with his shoulder injury expected to end his season. That became official Tuesday when he was moved to the 60-day injured list. His surgery is scheduled for Sept. 16.
According to the report, Wilson’s injury is similar to one A’s utility man Zack Gelof had last season. Gelof underwent surgery in September and began participating in baseball activity at spring training in mid-March.
In 80 games this season, Wilson was batting .266 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs. An All-Star and runner-up in American League Rookie of the Year voting last season, Wilson is batting .288 with 20 home runs and 103 RBIs in 233 career games with the A’s.
Wilson is one of four key members of the A’s lineup to have his season end by injury, along with All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers (knee), two-time All-Star designated hitter Brent Rooker (knee) and left fielder Tyler Soderstrom (hip). In addition, All-Star first baseman Nick Kurtz (right thumb) isn’t expected to return this season.
