GRAND PORTAGE, MN (KDAL) – In a close race down the stretch, Ryan Anderson and his team of dogs finished the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon 2 minutes and 27 seconds ahead of Erin Aili on Tuesday afternoon.
In doing so, Anderson becomes the first five time winner of the race along the North Shore of Lake Superior from Duluth to Grand Portage.
Aili, who won the race last year, took the lead several times during the final 8 miles but ended up in second place.
Third place went to Jesse Terry, Katherine Langlais finished fourth and Nathan Schroeder rounded out the top five.
The marathon began Sunday at Billy’s Bar in Duluth and, as of early Wednesday morning, several teams remain on the nearly 300 mile course heading to the finish at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino.
