DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Cargo volumes remained strong in September throughout the Great Lakes as ships delivered critical commodities and products without the delays and supply chain disruptions seen elsewhere.
According to figures from the St. Lawrence Seaway, cargo volumes this season is up by 2.6 percent from the same period in 2020.
The Port of Duluth-Superior moved 2.4 million short tons of iron ore in September, the season’s 2nd highest monthly total.
Overall tonnage this season is 37 percent ahead of last year and 3.4 percent above the five year average.
Grain shipping was also up in September with nearly 92,000 short tons moved from Twin Ports elevators.
Executive Director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, Deb DeLuca says hopes are that efficient cargo handling and free flowing connections will mean continued smooth sailing through the fall and winter months at the port.
