DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – As 17 active wildfires continue to burn in northeastern Minnesota, the St. Louis County Board on Tuesday approved a resolution declaring a state of emergency and disaster due to fire damage and the resources needed to battle the fires.
That procedural step enables the county to apply for state and federal reimbursements if certain thresholds are met.
The county is working the Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources and local fire departments to ensure a coordinated response to the wildfires.
A temporary evacuation point has been set up at the Babbitt Municipal Center to serve both St. Louis and Lake County residents impacted by the Camp and Sioux fires.
County Public Health staff is also at that location to assist people in connecting with necessary resources.
