ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says that bears are emerging from hibernation and are looking for food.
Home and cabin owners should take steps now to keep bears from searching for food on your property.
Bears can pick up a scent from more than a mile away and are attracted to bird seed, suet and unsecured garbage.
Besides removing bird feeders and securing garbage, clean and store grills and smokers and never leave pet food outdoors.
Once bears find an easy food source, they will likely return often.
If you encounter a bear on your property, the DNR says to be cautious and give them space and if human-bear conflicts persist, after food sources have been removed, contact a local DNR area wildlife office for advice.
