A dramatic come-from-behind win for UMD in Friday’s series opener, as Zam Plante tied the game with 22.9 seconds left in regulation, before winning it off a faceoff 3:30 into overtime.
That quickly, what appeared to be a chance for St. Cloud State to take the series lead on the road evaporated, and the Huskies are left to battle for their season over (they hope) the next two nights.
UMD will seek a spot in next weekend’s NCHC semifinals, and it will take a massive turn of events for that to happen at home, after the three high seeds all won convincingly on Friday night.
Joey Pierce returns for the Bulldogs (Jake Toll draws out), but Daniel Shlaine is also out for UMD. He played only 8:45 on Friday, in a game where UMD had to kill four St. Cloud State power plays (Shlaine is part of the PK rotation at forward). That certainly brings to light the possibility that something isn’t right with the freshman forward, but we’ll update on the socials when we know more. Braden Fischer will center the third line, which gives UMD an experienced penalty kill presence as well. It will be Fischer’s first game since Jan. 24 against Western Michigan.
St. Cloud State changes zero things.
