SUPERIOR, WI (KDAL) – At 2:45 Sunday morning, a Superior Police officer, responding to a potential domestic dispute, initiated a traffic stop of a vehicle near the intersection of Tower Avenue and North 37th Street.
The driver exited the vehicle and discharged a firearm, striking the officer. That officer and another officer who had also responded to the scene, returned fire hitting the suspect.
The suspect then fled the scene crashing into the entrance to the Superior Middle School.
The wounded officer was taken to a hospital and later released.
Just after 7 a-m, the suspect was apprehended by Douglas County Sheriff deputies assisted by officers from Superior and Duluth Police Departments and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s office.
The suspect was also taken to a hospital and then booked into the Douglas County Jail.
As with all officer involved shootings, the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Criminal Investigation Division is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
The entrance to the Middle School sustained significant damage and school officials say students will have an in-home learning day on Monday.
