COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — There are few secrets in the world of sports anymore. Everyone has video. Everyone can see what teams are trying to do, and they take the time to devise ways by which to poke holes in that with their personnel.
But Max Plante keeps finding ways to make plays. Friday’s natural hat trick to lead the way in a 4-2 UMD win wasn’t just the first of Plante’s college career, but it also vaulted him to a tie for first (with Will Horcoff of Michigan) in the nation for goals at 13. Max Plante and his older brother, Zam, are still 1-2 in the country in scoring, and Max continues to pace all of Division I by averaging 1.73 points per game.
(Quick note, for those into these things: They went back and added an assist for Zam Plante on Max Plante’s first goal Friday, the power play goal that leveled the game 2-2 in the second period. Ty Hanson had the only assist when it was announced. That gives Zam 24 points, two back of Max, and puts Zam in sole possession of first place nationally with 17 assists.)
Now we’ll see how UMD is able to follow up Friday’s comeback win. There’s plenty to build on, thanks to a strong final 40 minutes, but Kyler Kovich’s first period goal is the only one UMD got at level manpower with a goalie in the net. The Bulldogs struggled to finish a number of quality second-chance looks, and they will look to be better around CC goalie Kaidan Mbereko as they try for a sweep in the series.
Jake Toll draws in for Riley Bodnarchuk on the blue line for UMD. No other changes.
Adam Gajan vs Kaidan Mbereko.
(Quick programming note: With UMD’s men’s and women’s teams both on bye next weekend, there likely won’t be an update here until the trip to Kalamazoo in early December. Warm Thanksgiving wishes to everyone, thank you for making our content a part of your UMD fandom. Safe travels to everyone venturing somewhere for the holiday. You will find me on various couches, then aimlessly shopping for a new TV on Black Friday.)
