DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – After last appearing at a UMD men’s hockey game in December of 2010, the Maroon Loon will return to the ice this weekend as the Bulldogs host the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
According to a news release from UMD, the Maroon Loon became the Bulldog hockey team mascot in 1981 with Scott Johnson inside the loon costume.
That first costume was sewn together by the Duluth Blue Line Auxiliary women’s organization.
Others portraying the popular loon over the years included Ken Truscott, Jay Jackson, Brian Haedrich and Chad Moren.
On Friday night, the Maroon Loon will be back with its original costume and props and performing for the first time ever in the AMSOIL Arena.
The person inside the iconic loon costume this time was not named in the news release.
