It’s getting ridiculous.
UMD sophomore Ben Steeves is not only building on a very good freshman campaign, he’s doing everything he can to thrust himself into the Hobey Baker conversation.
A hat trick Friday night in UMD’s 6-2 win gives Steeves 20 goals for a second straight season, the first UMD player since Justin Fontaine (2009-2011) to post 20 or more goals in consecutive seasons, and it makes Steeves the first player since J.T. Brown to post 40 or more goals in his first two seasons at UMD.
(Brown scored 40 goals over two years as a Bulldog before turning pro.)
In nine games since Dec. 8, Steeves has 12 goals and 14 points while posting 54 shots on goal.
On a team with just 18 skaters available Friday, the best players have to be the best players. Steeves was.
As the Bulldogs seek a weekend sweep, they will not get freshman forward Matthew Perkins back. Coach Scott Sandelin told reporters after Friday’s game that Perkins has been steadily improving in recent days, and was able to skate the last couple days with the team, but obviously they’ve decided to err on the side of caution with the youngster, and we will hopefully see him next weekend in Omaha.
One change for Miami, as Tanyon Bajzer makes his Miami debut for William Hallen.
