DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Commercial shipping in the Twin Ports and on the Great Lakes has come to an end as the Soo Locks closed early Tuesday morning for the remainder of the winter season.
The U-S Army Corps of Engineers uses the time between now and the scheduled re-opening of the Poe Lock on March 25th to perform maintenance and repairs to the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
The smaller MacArthur Lock will open again on April 24th.
More than 4,500 vessels carrying 80 million tons of cargo pass through the locks each year.
According to the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, eight ships will spend the rest of the winter in the Twin Ports undergoing maintenance work.
