DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Selected well owners in St. Louis County will be contacted by the Department of Natural Resources for permission to sample water from their wells.
About 180 wells will be sampled for the development of a Groundwater Atlas of the county.
Wells will be selected based on geology, location, well depth and construction.
The water samples will help hydrologists to create maps of groundwater distribution, movement and pollution sensitivity of aquifers.
The Groundwater Atlas will be used to identify viable sources of drinking water, guide decisions for well and septic system construction in the county.
Completion is expected in 2025 and the atlas would then be available as printed maps, geographic information and available on the DNR website.
