ST. PAUL, MN (KDAL) – The latest Department of Natural Resources winter count estimates the moose population to be 3,150 animals.
For the ninth year in a row, the count shows the population remaining relatively stable despite a decline from last year’s estimate.
The survey looks at a 6,000 square mile area and uses a portion of that range each year to generate the estimate.
DNR researchers point out that Minnesota moose remain at risk over the long term as the population is down from 8,840 in 2006.
Low reproductive success and deaths from brainworm and other diseases makes it difficult for the moose numbers in the state to recover.
