DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – Heavy snow combined with winds gusting to over 50 miles per hour has made for difficult travel around the head of the lakes and the north shore Thursday night and early Friday morning.
Snow fell at rates of an inch an hour while winds whipped up some impressive drifts overnight. The winds also cut visibility to less than a quarter mile with near white-out conditions especially in open areas.
The National Weather Service Office in Duluth has a Blizzard Warning in effect for the Twin Ports area and the north shore of Lake Superior until 1 p-m on Friday. The rest of the region remains under a Winter Storm Warning during the same period.
By the time the storm winds down on Friday afternoon, snow totals are expected to be a foot or more in some areas.
State and local plow crews are working to keep main roads open and will then move on to lesser traveled roads and residential streets.
