DULUTH, MN (Northern News Now) – The long-debated future of the Lester Park Golf Course took a major step forward Monday night.
In a unanimous vote, the Duluth City Council approved the Lester Park Land Use Study, which includes transferring the property to the Duluth Economic Development Authority (DEDA) — a move aimed at paving the way for redevelopment.
The decision follows a recommendation from the city’s Planning Commission, which endorsed the move to begin the process of re-imagining the 253-acre site.
Councilors said the action marks the beginning of a larger effort to revitalize an area that has sat mostly idle for years.
Mayor Roger Reinert, who convened a working group last year to study potential uses for the site, supports the land transfer and sees it as a balanced opportunity for both housing and preservation.
Reinert said that future plans can still include open space and recreational components alongside housing.
The proposal now returns to the Planning Commission for review on Tuesday.
From there, the City Council is expected to vote specifically on the land transfer in November.
If approved, potential rezoning and redevelopment could begin as early as 2026.
