DEFINITELY NOT FAIRBANKS — It’s one game, but UMD absolutely sent a clear message in Friday’s impressive 5-1 win over Alaska.
For starters, that top line (Zam Plante between Max Plante and Jayson Shaugabay) is going to be a bear for adversaries to deal with. The three combined for 20 shot attempts on Friday — 19 of those were at even strength — and seven points (three goals and four assists). Max Plante scored twice, Zam once, and the three had multiple shifts where they were fully dominant.
In other words, they picked up right where they left off.
And UMD showed some depth. The all-freshman line of Daniel Shlaine, Hunter Anderson, and Ryan Zaremba combined for the Bulldogs’ season-opening goal, scored by Anderson, and Zaremba dished out a pair of assists.
UMD coach Scott Sandelin was mostly pleased, lamenting only a mid-ish game from the power play and the third period goal that cost Adam Gajan a shutout, a goal Sandelin said came from a bad line change.
Only one change for UMD, which swaps Harper Bentz in for Braden Fischer on the fourth line. Sandelin expects a more physical game from Alaska, so we’ll see if the Nanooks can slow down the Plante line and generate more puck possession of their own.
Alaska made a handful of changes, including in goal, where former Waterloo standout Calvin Vachon will make his first collegiate start.
