DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – The Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth has become the first certified Sensory Inclusive Zoo in the state of Minnesota.
The new initiative promotes accommodation and providing positive experiences for guests with sensory issues.
The staff at the zoo has been trained to recognize those guests with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation. Special bags containing noise canceling headphones, fidget tools and verbal cue cards are available to guests that may feel overwhelmed by the environment.
Sensory sensitivities or challenges are often experienced by those with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions.
Prior to visiting the zoo, families can download an app describing what sensory features are available and where to access them. It also provides a preview of what to expect while visiting the Lake Superior Zoo.
The certification was made by Kulture City, a leading non profit that has created over 350 sensory inclusive venues in four countries.
