DULUTH, MN (KDAL) – 98 artists submitted 195 flag designs after the City of Duluth announced a contest in January to come up with a new city flag.
Mayor Emily Larson created a Flag Committee that narrowed down the submissions to nine finalists. The public was then asked to rank their favorites online or at Duluth libraries.
The flag selected as the winning entry was designed by Blane Tetreault.
The colors found on the flag represent the blue of the sky and the lake, green of the north woods and white for the snowy winters.
The design symbolizes the Duluth hills and geographical features and acknowledges area tribal nations.
A resolution to adopt the new city flag will be voted on by the City Council on August 19th.
