DULUTH, MN (CBS-3) – According to UMD Chief of Police Sean Huls, authorities received a call around 9 p-m Tuesday that a suicidal man was on campus with a weapon and was trying to gain access to the medical or pharmacy school.
Huls says numerous officers responded to the situation, including those from the Duluth Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol and St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department.
A perimeter was set up around the two buildings to try and locate the suspect and take him into custody.
Within minutes of the call, UMD officials activated a SAFEU emergency alert system to notify university staff and students to take safety measures.
Then, about twenty minutes after the initial 911 call, officials had the individual in custody.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and charges will be pending.
